Our Workshop

__

Come learn with us! We will provide an overview course on how to design and manage complex international projects, including applying for contracts and grants. We will the training on international emergency response projects implementing humanitarian assistance across dividing lines in Afghanistan, Iraq, Somalia, and eastern Ukraine, but also scale that down to show how the same skills can be used to produce business or arts projects, as well. All revenue from training fees will go to the War Survivors Advisory civilian protection project.

Our Trainer

_

Daniel J Gerstle, founder of Humanitarian Bazaar, has managed emergency response, refugee casework, and consulted on protection in Afghanistan, Bosnia, Chechnya, Iraq, Somalia, and recently in the war in eastern Ukraine. He has managed projects with UNICEF, UNDP, the International Rescue Committee, International Medical Corps, People in Need, and more. See video above.

10:00 am |  Decisively Confirm Goals

_

  • Case Studies  |  Our discussion will rely on a few real projects to demonstrate how these ideas can be applied: (1) UNICEF & INGOs solving emergency water needs in the war in Ukraine; (2) Humanitarian Bazaar producing the Mogadishu Music Festival in war-torn Somalia; and (3) how one would launch a new kind of Bosnian cafe.
  • Goals  |  Make sure your leadership knows exactly who wants what, and how this project will help them overcome obstacles to achieve this. Choose S.M.A.R.T. goals and objectives, i.e. Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic, and Timely. And then find potential team, partners, donors to approach who match these goals and objectives.
  • Logical Framework  |  Most people map out an outline of what resources/ input are needed for activities which can achieve these goals with measurable impact. In international work, people call this a “Logframe” but you can use your own style of outline. The point is to make sure the team understands how resources can be used to
  • Planning  |  Once you have your outline, how resources will get you delivering activities which will achieve measurable impact toward your goals, then you’re ready to outline your business plan/ project plan/ grant application.

_

11:30 am |  Writing Business Plan & Budget

_

  • Business Plan Structure  |  Executive Summary, Goal/ Rationale (how this project will help your heroes overcome obstacles to achieve something important), Background/ Context, Objectives (activities per objective, input needed, indicators to measure success or impact), Team & Partners, Deliverables, Measuring Success, Conclusion.
  • Budget Structure  |   Timeline, Staffing, Travel, Equipment, Rentals, Insurance, Benefits, Overhead, and much more.
  • Long-Term Planning  |  Solve not only how to reach your goals, but how to prove that you have reached your goals.

_

13:00 pm  |  Finding Partners & Donors

_

  • Research  |  Online research is never enough. Most strong partnerships, contracts, and grants are solved through social connections.
  • Presentation  |  Presenting business or project plans to potential partners and donors. It’s never enough to just send an email or have a Powerpoint talk. Ideally, the project can be broken down into the following:
  • Submission  |  While you’ll need (1) the full project plan and budget with supporting docs such as survey data that proves the importance of your project, or letters from allies supporting the concept, you can also boil it down into (2) a concept paper which summarizes the project for people who want to take a quick look before reading the fill plan or proposal, (3) a one-pager is especially helpful in faster paced discussions to share the idea quickly, and (4) a two-sentence concept you can use verbally when you meet people who might want to support the project.

_

15:00 pm  |  Simulation Game

_

  • Now let’s practice what you’ve learned! We will call for people who have project concepts. If the presenter is ready, then the workshop participants can listen and give feedback what they love or think should be improved. If the concept is new, the workshop group can build an outline design and budget together. Otherwise, the trainer(s) will share real examples from emergency response, filmmaking, or small business.
  • Of course any questions and debate will be great!
