INTERNATIONAL CENTER FOR JOURNALISTS 2024 | The ICFJ chose Humanitarian Bazaar founder/director Daniel J. Gerstle as Health Innovation Journalism Fellow to support HB and Daniel’s long running work researching how to improve civilian self-protection in areas where international agencies and governments have not been able to keep them safe. With this fellowship, Humanitarian Bazaar primarily worked with Dar Productions to document the stories of how Sudanese medical teams saved lives on the front lines in besieged El Fasher, Darfur, Sudan. With the New Humanitarian’s support early on, the story series are now being published on Untold Magazine, 3ayin Sudan Media, and Humanitarian Bazaar Magazine.
SYRIAN METAL IS WAR 2019 | In Syrian Metal is War, the feature documentary, as seen on Arte and many other press, filmmaker Monzer Darwish takes us inside the world of Syria’s heavy metal musicians as they are torn apart by the war. As part of Humanitarian Bazaar’s Frontline Music project, Daniel J. Gerstle provided creative advice to Monzer and some of the musicians, calling in when they were pulling together the last heavy metal concert in Aleppo and writing about it for Rolling Stone. Daniel later helped Monzer write the first doc treatment.

ROCKABUL 2018 | In RocKabul, the feature documentary, director Travis Beard gives a shout out in the film to Rolling Stone (Middle East)’s feature story on Afghan metal and the rock festival, written by Daniel J. Gerstle with photos by David Gill. Daniel also appears briefly in the film introducing the band in their first live concert in the Sound Central Festival.
